Realms Collide: A Journey Through the World Tree
Welcome to Yggdrasil, the World Tree, the central pillar of the universe that connects and sustains nine distinct realms where all life exists. The cosmos in this story is not one made of empty space, but a living, sentient cosmic entity whose branches, trunk, and roots serve as a vast network of pathways. Inside this structure, there's a fragile balance that exists between the realms of divine grandeur, those of tireless industry, and even the ones of primordial chaos.
At the top, among the upper branches, stand the realms of unparalleled majesty and light. Asgard is the home of the gods. It's not only the gods who live here, though. Asgard is the home of Valhalla, or the place where the dead who fell in battle get to shine in their glory forever. It's a realm of divine power and order, connected to our own Midgard (or earth, as its inhabitants call it) by the legendary Bifrost.
Next to Asgard in the high branches of the World Tree is Alfheim, a realm of pure light, harmony, and unparalleled nature. It is the realm where the graceful Light Elves reside.
Midgard, the realm of humanity, is located in the center of the trunk below Asgard and Alfheim, and is surrounded by a great ocean. It is a world of diversity and technological progress; however, most of its inhabitants have lost their knowledge of the greater cosmos and are dangerously ignorant of the larger forces that control their fate.
In the roots of the World Tree is Muspelheim, the realm of primordial fire. It is eternally consumed by churning flame and molten rock, ruled by the mighty Fire Giants.
On the other end of the thermometer, there's Niflheim, the realm of primordial mist and ice. It exists in an absolute cold that saps all warmth from anyone who enters.
Directly below Midgard is Helheim, another realm of desolate cold, inhabited by the restless spirits of the unglorious dead, is ruled by the grim Queen Hel.
Next to Helheim, on another section of roots, is Jotunheim, the realm of Ice Giants, and the home of the antagonist of the story. It's a vast and untamed land of colossal scale, where immense beings of ice and stone reside.
Finally, at the very base of the World Tree, deep in its lower roots, lies Svartalfheim, a subterranean world of unparalleled craftsmanship and industry, home to the dwarven clans.
All this perfect balance is at risk due to an ancient prophecy, previously thought to be known to certain dwarven clans, that states, "Midgard's flesh shall touch sacred stone and a new path shall be forged or an old one broken". This cosmic balance is now shifting, and not only the fate of all nine realms, but the very survival of Yggdrasil itself, hinges on two teenagers restoring the balance that is now being dangerously disturbed.
