Creator's Journal: Entry 1 - August 1st 2025
It's been a crazy couple of weeks, and I’ve made significant strides. The foundation is much stronger now, and the world is starting to feel incredibly lifelike.
The biggest win has been locking in the core concept of the "Gift of Austri" and the Yggdrasil Pathways. I love that Andrew's and Tessa's gifts are complementary, two halves of a greater whole. It makes their sibling bond so much more central and powerful. Andrew tends to take the role as the "Grounded one" who ends up being able to perceive the physical stability of the world's pathways, and Tessa, as the "intuitive one," ends up being able to hear the actual song of the World Tree, which is a perfect dynamic. This also gives me a precise mechanism for realm travel that isn't just a simple teleport, but a perilous, skill-based journey through a corrupted cosmic circulatory system.
I'm particularly pleased with the character work I've done. I've established Andrew as the protective, resourceful older brother, burdened by grief and guilt but fueled by a fierce resolve. His journey from reluctant hero to a masterful guardian feels earned. On the other side, Tessa's arc from intuitive and vulnerable to a powerful, emotionally whole individual will be so compelling. Her unique connection with Astrid is a source of healing and love, adding a beautiful layer to her story. Her struggle with Lyra's brainwashing will be a visceral part of her journey.
Speaking of Lyra, I think I've successfully established her as a genuinely terrifying and ancient threat. She's not just a generic villain; her motivations are deeply rooted in twisted devotion and vengeance. Her chaos magic and ability to corrupt Yggdrasil directly make her the perfect threat for the heroes.
The progress on the manuscript is also solid. I've moved through the initial fall and separation, and the awakening of Andrew and Tessa’s gifts is now on the page. The pacing feels good, and I’m excited for the next part of their journey. I have the framework for the rescue mission, and the looming threat of the Stonehearts’ retaliation feels real.
I've moved from world-building concepts to a living, breathing narrative with real stakes and emotional depth. The story is on a strong trajectory, and I look forward to diving back in.
